The black jewelry box in this painting symbolizes a confined state wherein we are trapped. It could be imprisonment, addiction, being in debt, illness, oppressive work place or home etc.. When the box is closed, it would be completely dark inside.
The Tiffany chain necklace could be a symbol of enslavement. But, it also looks like a dog tag chain worn by a soldier who willing to put it on himself to set his beloved free. The necklace is arranged to show how it is stopping the black box from closing.
